When was the last time you saw a man with a sandwich board carrying the legend – “the end is nigh”? Some time, I guess. The end of things is something we might expect to hear about from  exotic American pastors but rarely in mainstream Christianity. Yet, it’s the subject of this week’s Bible readings for many churches. Be prepared, but how? Well the answer we get from the Old Testament reading should challenge us in the churches. Amos has God saying, I’m not bothered about your songs, your religious assemblies and so on. What I want to see is justice! “Let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream.” An apt challenge given the events at St Paul’s cathedral over the last days? Yes, but also for all of us who count ourselves inheritors of the Jesus tradition.
